Music from Appendices

Appendix I
See first reference to this appendix on page 128.

In order to provide an understandable set of examples of thematic variation, Copland wrote a set of variations of the most common types, all based on the simple tune, "Ach! du lieber Augustin". These make up Appendix I of the book. Copland refers to this appendix on page 128 of the Signet Classics edition.

Appendix III
See first reference to this appendix on page 154.

In this appendix, Copland offers us a famous Beethoven piano piece for a detailed listening analysis of sonata form. He provides a detailed description of the first movement. For more about the other two movements, look HERE, after listening for familiar forms.

Video

Beethoven—“Waldstein” Sonata, Op. 53, first movement, including numbered measures. This video provides an excellent way to try to follow Copland's detailed analysis of the first movement, in Appendix III (analysis provided below the video).

I recommend reading lightly over the analysis first, then listening to the first video, with the music and the score. Finally, listen to the second video, with the full Sonata, performed by Claudio Arrau.

The following video presents Copland's recommended performance of the entire sonata.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Claudio Arrau (1903-1991)

The movements are as follows

I. Allegro con brio II. Introduzione. Adagio molto - attacca III. Rondo. Allegretto moderato - Prestissimo

Besides the sonata form of movement I, what other musical forms can you find in the other movements?
